One nation...under Facebook.

At the gym the other day I heard two girls in the sauna jabbering on in Russian. Hearing that language (to my ear at least) gossiping in a way that sounds like argueing is about as far away from achieving a zen moment in the sauna as one can get. And then in the middle of their conversation I hear "blahbkahblahvodkadaFACEBOOKblahajsdkjskjhldFACEBOOK". I was actually shocked that the facebook epidemic is able to seep into every young culture while relying on practically no advertising. And then I was considering whether or not I could and should buy shares in Facebook. It's a site that generates revenue so I don't see why not although it's free to sign up and join so I am not sure. I know that any internet investment can be here today blah tommarow...anyone have any answers?

Facebook is not a publicly traded company so you cannot buy stock in it. I think Microsoft owns a sizable chunk of it, but I could be wrong.

Facebook is a privately held company with equity investors including Microsoft who have a 1% or 2% stake in it. Thing is, these successful companies have lots of folks throwing money at them to invest making it harder for Joe Blow (that's you and me) to get in on the action. They have tens of millions of users with hundreds of thousands of new users monthly. That's $$ to advertisers and other business opportunities they can launch. If they were hard up and looking for investors there would be a chance you could email them and say "you want some money, yo".
So basically there probably are no shares available to the general public and those ruskies you overheard are just another way for the owners of FB to make more coin.

I can see Steve reading your blog now...excitement in his eyes. Did someone say shares? equity? investment? Not to worry, brother in law is on the way. Project manager by day, blog comment poster and dad by night.
